Last week, we were joined by two creative medics from our community for a ‘Creative Conversation’.

@raybould_sarah and @lily_and_lyra Krupa Patel shared their creative journeys into poetry and visual art, and how they make it work alongside their medical careers.

For this uplifting hour, we explored the benefits and the challenges of making space to make. Accountability, perfectionism and permission were keywords.

Creativity as healing was felt strongly throughout.

But creativity is simply the act of creating...no agenda, no fixed outcome, no pressure.

In healthcare, we use our creative minds all the time... to individualise care, to solve problems and make meaning.

At Creative Clinic, we believe in the power of creativity as a way in to wellbeing for everyone. From Queen Victoria’s doodles to Tom Daley’s poolside knitting to your local hospital’s choir, we see examples of people using creativity as a way to connect, relax, channel mindfulness and express themselves.

Sarah is a twice Pushcart nominated poet and doctor from the Peak District in the UK. She has poetry and mixed-genre work published or upcoming with IceFloe Press, Ink Sweat and Tears, Black Bough Poetry, iamb, Arcana Poetry Press, After…amongst others. She is often inspired by the natural world and explores the dialogue between poetry and art, music, spoken word and film poetry.

Krupa is a GP, artist, and mum of two, based in Birmingham. She has fallen in love with abstract, intuitive painting. As a lifelong perfectionist, learning to let go and allow each piece to evolve has been both challenging and freeing….and it’s brought a lot of joy into her life. She has also enjoyed creating digital artwork by hand.

In this online event, Sarah and Krupa will shine a light on their creative lives and share what creativity means to them, with an opportunity for questions and answers to keep the inspiration flowing. Come and be a part of this ‘Creative Conversation.’ We’d love to see you.

We used pencil and pen to look at proximity of objects to each other, shading and tone.
The hour passed quickly and was very relaxing.

@stoneygatecentre This online writing for empathy workshop offers a safe and non-judgemental space for you to explore how stories shape empathy.

You are invited to explore how creative writing can spark empathy, understanding, and emotional growth in every part of life.

With gentle guidance, reflective writing prompts and conversations, you’ll discover how writing can become a meaningful practice for cultivating compassion, reflection and insight and authentic connection.

No previous experience of creative writing is necessary. Just bring paper, pen and curiosity.

@stoneygatecentre improves patients’ lives by pioneering a new approach to medical education and training that places empathy at the heart of healthcare. Its goal is to equip the NHS with empathic, compassionate, and resilient healthcare practitioners. Its research and partnerships will support the practice and structure of empathic healthcare in the UK and beyond.

@drhlfoster is a community-engaged writer, researcher, writing for wellbeing practitioner and poetry-film-maker. She is a Creative Writing Associate at the Centre for Empathic Healthcare at the University of Leicester Medical School where she is working on a poetry film project about menopause.

She has worked with a range of creative organisations and community agencies, including Writing East Midlands, Shine Lincolnshire and Old Bird Theatre Company, designing and delivering writing for wellbeing programmes for diverse audiences, including carers, people living with mental health challenges, people experiencing isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and women living without children.

She is a writer in residence for CILIP, the Chartered Institute for Librarians and Information Professionals.

She holds a PhD in Creative Writing and her latest co-authored book, Arts for Health: Creative Writing, is out now with Emerald Press.
